I wish I had spent my money on another venue
The BJCC concert hall is, frankly, not a great venue. One directly behind the other, lined up are the seats, not staggered; this was accurate for the section we sat in. I sat in front of me, a guy who was about 6'7 and moved his gigantic head throughout the entire show, so I could only see about half of it. To see at an angle where the performers appeared to be standing horizontally, I had to literally crane my neck as far as I could to one side or the other for the part of the show I could see. Two mixed drinks, two Bud Lights, and a pretzel at the concession stand, we paid $40. I've been to recently, and getting something that at least has a flavor, which was disappointing because there were no other beers available, limes looked like they had already been chewed. The show itself seemed to cater to a stereotype about Alabama. He showed up anticipating that he would get the most laughs from football and gay jokes (most of which, it seemed, the audience was not able to decipher as being NOT homophobic), and that's exactly what happened. I had hoped that Opera Tampa would give Alabama a little credit in that respect; unfortunately, as I had half-expected, he showed up. I don't think I can blame the mediocre performance entirely on his ability, however; he was right about that. I am a fan who appreciates his twisted brand of humor, but I found myself outside of that sports-obsessed, homophobic majority. There weren't many of those, and I mostly enjoyed the bits that weren't about football; the few he pulled out didn't seem to get much of a reaction from the audience. He could benefit by not coming to work with preconceived notions about what kind of audience he will have when he performs in a certain area of the country. He could have waited to assume that there were nothing but inbred SEC fans in the audience and to start catering solely to them. The Nick Saban jokes (whoever Saban is) brought about a huge reaction, and I can't really say I blame him for trying to get the most applause rather than trying to work hard to appeal to those few in the crowd who prefer more intelligent humor. My advice to anyone considering seeing a show at the BJCC concert hall is simply: don't. Especially if you're under six feet tall and looking forward to seeing a stand-up comedy show that isn't affiliated with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, or if you're planning on being able to see the show.
